Money and Intelligence: Little to No Relation

Lately, I have been feeling a bit discouraged. When you really sit down and think it over, where exactly are we teens headed? No matter how smart or talented you are, there seems to be no guarantees in the new economy.

Our parents grew up in an era when having a master’s degree or even a bachelor’s degree in something actually meant something. Lately, our academic standards have been rising – dramatically. Last week, my uncle called me from Korea, telling me that he can’t find a job – he has a Doctor’s in Business Administration.

So what hope is there for all of us young and budding teens? What can we possibly do with a bachelor’s, or a college degree?

It’s a relief that I found this commentary on a research article today.

It seems to be that although people with higher IQ’s tend to make more money, each group of people at different levels of intelligence undergo the same financial troubles. It doesn’t matter who you are, if you are not careful, you will end up with maxed credit cards, unpaid loans, and bankruptcy. Hey, if General Motors can go bankrupt, who can’t?

According to this article, in order to be on top of your money, you must have:

Ambition: somewhere deep in you, there has to be this powerful drive to excel financially

Willpower: you need to put your thoughts (and/or *intelligent* analysis) into action. There is a big difference (usually recognized as “results“) between just *knowing* about things and implementing them. Also, once you find the right direction, you need to keep pushing to make progress along that direction – that requires quite a bit of discipline.

Emotional Stability: when stocks are on the low, you must gather the courage to continue with your investment. You must be consistent in how you approach your money making process and you must not let emotions deter you from the best way of producing income.

So I leave you today with a pretty interesting paradox:

  • It is dumb to be smart but not wealthy
  • It is smart to be dumb but wealthy

I hope many of you will truly find out that you don’t have to be smart to become wealthy – just mentally strong and with a good attitude in life. Don’t be lazy, don’t procrastinate, be on time, be organized, and you’ll realize that you don’t need intelligence in order to succeed financially.

Cheers,
-Eric

  1. WHAT WE NEED IS A REVOLUTION! Commies unite! The rich get richer while the poor get children. It’s the fault of the capitalist dogs! We need true freedom! No restraints that bar us from opportunity! Gimme my sickle and hammer over the green back anyday.
